Word Counter & Character Count Tool
Paste or type your text to instantly count words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, and reading time.
What Is a Word Counter?
A word counter is a free online tool that instantly calculates the total word count, character count, sentence count, paragraph count, and estimated reading time of any text you paste or type. Instead of counting words manually or opening desktop software like Microsoft Word, this free word counter gives you all the numbers in real time — no button click required.
Our word count tool runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server, so your content stays completely private. It is safe to use with essays, confidential documents, business copy, or any sensitive material.
How to Count Words Online
- Paste or type your text into the input box above.
- Your word count, character count, sentence count, and reading time update instantly on the right.
- Use the Clear button to reset the counter.
- Use the Copy button to copy your text back to the clipboard.
Reading time is calculated at 200 words per minute — the widely used average adult reading speed. A 1,000-word article shows approximately 5 minutes of reading time.
Who Uses a Word Count Checker?
- Students and academics — checking essay word counts for assignments, dissertations, and UCAS personal statements with strict word limits.
- Bloggers and content writers — hitting target word counts for SEO and estimating reading time to display at the top of articles.
- SEO specialists — verifying page content meets minimum word count targets for search rankings.
- Copywriters — keeping ad copy, social posts, and email subject lines within character limits (e.g. Twitter/X 280, SMS 160).
- Authors and novelists — tracking manuscript word count against genre targets (e.g. 80,000–100,000 words for a novel).
- Developers — measuring string length or checking how much text a UI component needs to handle.
Understanding Each Statistic
Word Count
Words are counted by splitting text on whitespace. Any continuous sequence of non-space characters is counted as one word. This matches how most word processors count words.
Character Count (with spaces)
Counts every character including spaces, punctuation, and line breaks. This is the standard character count used by most platforms.
Character Count (without spaces)
Counts only non-whitespace characters. Useful when a platform's limit excludes spaces, or when you need to measure only the letter and symbol count.
Sentence Count
Counts sentences by detecting terminal punctuation (periods, exclamation marks, question marks). Works best with standard English punctuation.
Reading Time
Estimated at 200 words per minute — a standard adult reading pace for general online content.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this word counter free?
Yes, 100% free. There is no sign-up, no subscription, and no usage limit. Use it as often as you need.
Is my text stored anywhere?
No. All processing happens in your browser. Your text is never sent to any server and is never stored.
How do I check word count online?
Simply paste or type your text into the box above. The word count and all other statistics update in real time — no button click needed.
Does the character counter include spaces?
We show both: character count with spaces and character count without spaces, so you can use whichever figure your platform requires.
Does it work with languages other than English?
Yes. The word counter, character counter, and paragraph counter work with any language. Sentence detection works best with languages that use standard punctuation marks.
Is there a word or character limit?
No hard limit. Very large texts (tens of thousands of words) may slow real-time updates slightly depending on your device.
What is the average word count for a blog post?
Most SEO-focused blog posts target 1,500–2,500 words. Shorter posts (300–600 words) work well for news and updates, while in-depth guides often exceed 3,000 words.
Can I use this to count my words online?
Yes — that is exactly what this tool is for. Paste or type your text and the word count appears instantly. It works as a live word count checker online with no button click needed.
Does the word count update in real time?
Yes. This is a live word counter — every statistic updates instantly with each keystroke. There is no submit button or delay.
Can I count specific words in my text?
The tool counts total words, characters, sentences, and paragraphs. To count how many times a specific word appears, use the browser's built-in Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on Mac) find function while your text is in the box — it highlights every match and shows the count.
Can I calculate speaking time from my word count?
Reading time is shown automatically. As a general rule, speaking time is slightly longer: an average speaker delivers around 130 words per minute, so divide your word count by 130 to estimate speaking time. A 650-word speech takes approximately 5 minutes to deliver.
Can it count keywords or unique words?
The current tool counts total words. For keyword frequency or unique word counts, you can copy your text and paste it into a dedicated keyword counter or unique word counter tool. We may add this feature in a future update.
Can I use this to reduce my word count?
Not directly — this tool measures text, it does not edit it. However, seeing a live word count as you write is the first step in reducing word count: identify which paragraphs are heaviest, then trim accordingly. Some writers paste a draft, note the count, edit in their text editor, then paste back to verify the reduction.
